Level 4 Video Examples

Identifying what you need to do to achieve a Level 4 (A grade)

There is evidence of excellence in the creativity of the technical skills:
  • Holding a shot steady where needed- using a tripod
  • Framing a shot including and excluding elements as appropriate
  • Using different shot distances as needed
  • Shooting material appropriate to the task set
  • Selecting mise-en-scene-colour, figure, lighting, objects and setting
  • Editing so that meaning is clear to the audience
  • Using different shot transition and other effects appropriately to the task
  • Using sound with images and editing appropriately for the task
  • Using titles appropriately

Looking at the example of how students have achieved Level 4 for your brief and identifying what they have done well.

The Opening to this film uses the technical areas well and puts over the meaning and theme to the audience clearly making them able to follow the plot of the film. The shots throughout the opening were steady which allowed the viewer to clearly see what was happening. The types of shots used matched in with what they are trying to put across being that the shot is kept steady means that the theme is clearly understood. The way in which the shots were framed allowed the viewer to see what was needed to allow them to flow with the storyline. This I felt is an important part to the opening and knowing this I will need to think carefully about what I need to include and exclude from the shot to put across the correct plot to the viewer.

Using the different shot distances help to create a better understanding of the location and allows the viewer to known what is happening. Then using close ups helps them to connect with the character. The distances of the shot is important and I found that they used a variation of different distances which allowed the audience to get a better understanding to what is going to happening. This means that I need to think about the different shots types I use when filming.

From watching  the opening you know what the theme for the film is and what was included in the film fits in with this. This is done through the way in which they use mise-en-scene. I found that the lighting used stood out the most from these elements. You can tell from the film that mise-en-scene was something that the group gave a lot of time to and is something that I need to think about clearly when filming and setting up of my film.

The editing used clearly puts over the meaning of the film to the audience. This was done by the use of transition and the way in which the editing followed to create the right atmosphere. When doing the preliminary task I found that my editing was a weak point and when I come to edit I need to take care as it is an important part which can be seen by this example. The way in which they put in the titles fit in with the genre and did not break away from the action. This I found was effective and I hope to put in my titles in a similar way.

Relating this to your ideas so far for you product.

From watching this video it helped me think about my idea and the way in which I could change it to fit in with what I need to do to achieve a level 4 looking at the ways in which I could improve it. Looking at the opening I realised what elements I need to think about more carefully such as the mise-en-scene and the titles. Knowing these and knowing what I need to think about for my product will help me to create a better product.

You have produced good research into similar products and your target audience, and detailed planning. Your time management is also impressive.
