The characters in my film are represented in a stereotypical way. I chose to represent them in this way as from my research I found that this appealed to my audience and help them gain a understating of the characters. The main way in which I represent my characters is through different elements of the mise-en-scene such as the costumes, props and location. Representing them in this way put over the plot of the film. Putting across the characters in this way fitted in with the genre, this would then make my film appeal to a wider audience by fitting in with other teen films. If I was to redo the opening I would keep the representation of the characters the same being that I felt that doing it like this appeal to the audience, matching in with the genre and other teen films. Representing the characters in away that appealed to the audience and created believable characters.
The costume of Emma use dark colours which connotes the type of characters she is to the audience being that this is the stereotypical way in which the audience would view her. Representing her in a way that shows to the audience that she is the bully. Choosing to represent her in this way meant that it fits in with the conventions of the genre. I chose to represent her in this way as I felt that the audience would be able to relate to the type of character she is through the use of costumes, her costume also allows the audience to know what social group is being shown through her costume. The costume represents her to be in a lower social group. Being that it is scruffy and it the way in which the social group is stereotypical viewed.
The costumes for Lilly is different to Emma but fulfils the same outcome. I chose to use the costumes as it clearly shows the audience her social groups being that she is smartly dressed which puts over that she is of a high class. This is done by using the costumes and props such as the bag and glass, putting over her social group in a way the represents the stereotypical view of her. The way in which the costume in used shows Lilly being represent in the stereotypically way for the type of character she is. Doing this makes it easier of the audience to understand the type of person she is.
When writing the script I thought about the language I used, looking at the way in which the language would represent the character and put them over in a realistic way. I chose to recreate language that was typical to the way in which the target audience spoken to make the characters appeal to the audience, with them coming over more believable, making the opening have verisimilitude and doing this appeal to the audience. I chose to have different idiolect for each character, having Emma being more upfront and Lilly sacred this is show as Lilly is unable to finishes what she is saying. I felt that when editing the way in which the language came over allowed the audience to gain an understanding of the character and the way in which they are represented. If I was to redo the film I would development the script more to include more language to help put over the characters representation to the audience.
I found that the way that I represented my characters was in a stereotypical way putting them over in this way makes it clearly to the audience who they are. Looking at the audience feedback I found that doing was a positive thing being that they were able to know who the character were. I also felt that the way in which I represent the characters was in a realistic way being that the audience were able to understand the type of character they were and relate to them.
Looking at the way I represented in relation to gender using females is un-stereotypical with bullying as it is seen to be a male thing. I felt that doing this brought more attention the issues of bullying. I chose to sue females as I felt that this would appeal to my audience more being that it is target at a female audience and by using female characters the audience will be able to them. I chose for the character that was the bully to have ginger hair this is un-stereotypical being that it is normal seen to be the ginger person to be getting bullied. I chose to do it the other way around as I felt that it would have a better impact on the audience.
The age of the characters is put over by the location and the costume fitting in with the stereotypical idea for this genre. Using this age I felt that it would appeal to my audience being that they will be able to relate to the characters. The social age group that they represent is done in an un-stereotypical way being that are not shown to be out drinking or partying.
The social class of the characters is represented through the costumes they wear being that Lilly wears smarter clothes and has more props such as books, putting this in shows her to be in a higher class and more intellectual. This repetition of her is stereotypical and fits in with the genre. Were as Emma costumes is more stuffy which represented that she is from a lower social class because of this it puts across of this its a stereotypical view of the bully.
Looking at other films and the way that they represent their characters I fond that the way in which I put over my characters fits in with the way that they are put over in these films but being that I do not have any stereotypical teenage girls as the main character is un-stereotypical being that the ‘nerd’ Lilly is the main character, doing this dose not fit in with similar films. Though in the film over all their would be more stereotypical characters put into the film making my film fit in with other teen films more.
The way in which I have represented my characters fits in with the research I have done and reflect the way in which I want my character to come over to the audience. I fill that the characters that I have represented appeal to the audience and fit in with the genre. If I was to create the characters again then I would kept the same type of characters that I have made but try to make them come over clearly to the audience and to make them more 3D for the audience to have a better understanding of them.
