Focus Group

I got a small group of people that would be my target audience and showed them the opening of different teen films to find out why they liked this genre. Also to know the strength and the weakness of the opening finding this out we help me in making a successful product that will appeal to my target audience.

From doing a focus group I found out why my target audience like this genre. The main reason I found was to do with the plot and the storyline of the film. Knowing this means that when writing the script I will have to include that points made to make it appeal to my audience. They said a good teen film need to be easy to follow, having this information means that I will keep the plot straight forward so that the audience will be able to understand what is happening. Though they all agreed with this they also said that they liked teen films as they were able to put across serious issues in a funny was. Asked them what type of issues they though would be best to use. This was about relationship between family, friends, girlfriends and boyfriends. Though this issue is ofen used in teen film, so to make my film stand out I will have to put the issue across in a different way. Along with this the audience need to be able to relate to what is happening. For my film I was going the try and do this though the characters by making them believable and making the audience able to connect with them and relate to them. To go along with the genre it needs to have funny and romantic elements in the film as well. This view was also backed up by the results I got of my questionnaire. This means that putting in elements that use this is important for it makes the film appeal to the audience more.

I showed the focus group the opening of the film ’13 going on 30’ and asked them what they though of the opening. They said that the characters in the film were put across well and as an audience you know who the characters were. This was strength of the film and from knowing who the characters were from the start helped them to gain an idea on what is going to happen in the film. Knowing this makes the opening appeal to the audience in my opening I will try and make the characters clear to the audience. Along with this the music used helps to put effect on what is happening in the scene and who the characters are. This I feel is also an important part to the narrative and helps the audience to know what it is. The main weakness that the focus group said was that the titles used were not very clear and felt like they were being aimed at a younger audience. Knowing this when I came to edit my film I will make sure that the titles I use are clear showing what they are saying and fit in with my target audience.

From discussing the teen film genre and the opening of the film with my audience helped me to think about how I will make my film appeal to the audience and the ways in which I can create the opening to make the storyline clear. I will also hope to use the right techniques when editing and filming to make sure that my film will appeal to the audience and put across the plot clearly.
